Intro
There’s something magical about turning forgotten pieces into something beautiful. That’s exactly what happened with these two one-of-a-kind handmade crossbody purses. Made with vintage fabrics, trims, and findings gathered over the years at estate sales, flea markets, and thrift stores, each purse is a little piece of the past reimagined for today. And while I didn’t know how I’d use every button or bit of fringe when I picked them up, I trusted that someday they’d find their perfect home.

A Closer Look at the Handmade Process
Each purse came together in its own unique way, depending on the textures, trims, and materials I chose — and how they decided to “speak” to the project.

To start, I used my trusted cutting board — the Dritz 890 Superboard Durable Craft Board — which I’ve had for years. It’s great for measuring and cutting fabric without needing a big setup, and it folds for easy storage. (You can find it online or at many local craft stores.)

The Inspiration Behind the Purses
I’ve always been drawn to vintage materials—not just for how they look, but for the stories they carry. When I finally sat down to make these purses, it felt like all those collected bits and bobs came together with a purpose. I wanted to create something useful and stylish while honoring the craftsmanship of the past.

After determining the size I wanted, I cut a rectangle of doubled fabric, adding length for the fold-over closure and a little extra width. I did the same for the lining. Then, with right sides together, I sewed along the width, pressed the seams open, and folded the piece over so the front fabric showed. Because I left the edges raw and unfussy, I could simply fold the fabric upward to the purse’s desired length, leaving a flap at the top. I stitched down each side twice for structure.

For “Lace & Legacy,” I machine stitched most of the lace and doilies to the outer fabric before assembling the bag. I then hand-sewed the finer details like the buttons and focal embellishments after the purse was fully constructed — to get the placement just right.

“Taupe Tangle” was more hands-on: I started by hand-stitching the vintage doilies and taupe fringe in place on the outer fabric before assembling the purse. Once those were secure, I machine-stitched the purse together, sewing through the edges of the doilies and fringe as a final step to reinforce them — ensuring they stayed put and giving the piece a neat, sturdy finish.
